Chose a $200 used laptop over a $500 new one for my sophomore year

I had to pick between a refurbished ThinkPad for $200 and a shiny new HP for $500. I went with the ThinkPad because I needed something that could handle heavy Excel sheets for my econ classes. It's been 4 months now and the thing still boots up in 10 seconds flat. My roommate's new HP already has a busted hinge and a chipped screen. Has anyone else gotten a used business laptop and had it last way longer than expected?

Love that you went with the ThinkPad. I've seen so many people chase the shiny new stuff and end up with broken hinges and cracked plastic after a few months. Those business laptops are built like tanks, they take a beating and just keep going. The fact that your roommate's HP is already falling apart says it all really. You absolutely made the right call, those refurb ThinkPads are workhorses that just refuse to die.

My ThinkPad from 2017 still boots up like it's got a grudge to settle. The thing's more dented than my self-esteem after a bad test. But hey, at least it doesn't have a busted hinge like your roommate's HP. I think the only thing that'll kill this laptop is if I accidentally dump coffee on it.
