Tried a $20 pour-over kettle at a garage sale, now my Chemex tastes like a chemistry lab
I found this beat-up gooseneck kettle at a garage sale in Portland last Saturday for 20 bucks. The guy said it was his ex-wife's and he just wanted it gone. I brought it home, cleaned it out with vinegar, and made my usual morning pour over. The coffee came out bitter and kind of metallic, not like my normal brew at all. I thought maybe I messed up the grind size or water temp, so I tried again with the same result. Turned out the kettle had a weird coating inside that was flaking off into the water. I learned my lesson, never buy used coffee gear without checking the inside first. Has anyone else gotten burned by a cheap secondhand coffee gadget?

Vinegar soak fixed mine, but that coating sounds like a total loss.
