Unpopular opinion: cranking feed on aluminum to 'read the chips' is bad advice and a lead hand in Dayton finally broke me of it | CNC Operators - HW Forums
The "read the chips" thing gets passed around like gospel but it's really just watching for built up edge, which tells you basically nothing about your actual feed and speed. Cranking feed way up on aluminum can help break a chip but it also pounds your tool and screws up your finish if you're not careful. The real move is finding the sweet spot for your setup, not just maxing feed because some lead hand said so.
Chip reading is really just the starting point. Cross reference that with your spindle load, finish, and tool life over a few parts and you'll actually dial in the sweet spot instead of guessing off one signal.
