Tool offsets shifted after 2 hours, spindle was growing
Ran a 14 part batch last Tuesday and every part after #9 came out 0.003 oversize. Chased my tool offsets for an hour before I checked the spindle temp. It was 20 degrees hotter than morning start. Spindle thermal growth is real, especially on older machines without coolant through the spindle. Who else has fought thermal drift on a long run and what do you do to compensate?
Whoa, 20 degrees hotter? That's a huge jump, I would've lost my mind by part #9 too. I've seen thermal drift before but usually it's like a few tenths over a whole day, not three thousandths after just a couple hours. Did you check the spindle bearing housing or measure the growth directly, because 20 degrees sounds like something else might be rubbing or heating up that shouldn't be?
