Back in 2017 at Thompson Fabrication in Dayton, my leadman kept telling me to slow down the spindle on our Haas VF-2 when cutting 4140. I thought he was just being slow, so I kept running 8k RPM and burning through inserts every 30 parts. Finally I tried his numbers, 5,200 RPM with a heavier chip load, and my tool life doubled plus the surface finish got way cleaner. Anyone else had an old timer's advice that went against every YouTube tutorial you watched?
I read a forum post once where a guy said the same thing about slowing down and letting the tool actually cut instead of rubbing. His point was that YouTube guys are always chasing max RPM but they don't show you the insert bill. Your leadman's numbers sound like the real world beating the internet again.
