A retired toolmaker at the Dayton shop show saved my butt on a boring bar setup
Stopped by the machine tool show in Dayton back in March and watched a retired toolmaker named Gus indicate a boring bar in about 90 seconds. He used a simple dial test indicator on the bar itself instead of sweeping the bore, said he'd done it that way for 40 years. I tried it on a job with a .002 tolerance when I got back and hit it first try, which never happens for me. Anyone else pick up a trick at a show that stuck with them?
My uncle swears by that same trick, says the bar reads truer than chasing the bore with an indicator. Read a forum thread once where guys argued about it for pages and the old timers all sided with Gus.
