Warning: my $200 EV fast charger install failed inspection
Paid an electrician $200 to hardwire a Level 2 charger in my garage, then the city inspector flagged it because the breaker panel was already at max load. Anyone else hit surprise code issues when going electric?

The part nobody talks about is how the load calc gets done before anyone touches a wire. Your electrician should have run those numbers first since the panel is the one thing you cant just swap out for cheap. Most houses built in the last 20 years have a 200A panel that looks fine until you add up the range, dryer, AC, and now a 40A charger running for hours at a time. Some areas let you use a load management device that cuts the charger when the house pulls too much, which can get you past the inspector without a panel upgrade. Worth asking your inspector if that's allowed where you live because a service upgrade can run a few grand.
