Took me 11 months to get a heat pump rebate from my state and the hold time was the easy part
Back in January 2024 I got a heat pump put in my house in Ohio and the installer told me I could get $2,000 back through a state program if I sent in three forms. Simple, right? Wrong. First they said my invoice didn't show the model number in the right spot. Then they claimed my contractor wasn't on their approved list, so I had to call the contractor, wait 6 weeks for him to send a letter, and resubmit. Then in August they mailed me a rejection saying I'd missed a deadline that was never printed on any form I got. I called the state office 14 times over 3 months and got put on hold for 40 minutes each time. It finally landed in November, 11 months after the install, and the check was for $1,850, not $2,000, with no explanation. I did eventually get the money but I'm wondering if anyone else hit this wall or found a shortcut, because I have a buddy in Indiana thinking about the same upgrade and I want to save him the headache.
My trick was to call my state rep's office. Not the state energy office, the actual person who represents your district. Their staff has a direct line to these agencies and my hold time went from 40 minutes to next day callback. Also send everything certified mail so you have proof of when they got it. That deadline they claimed I missed? They magically found my paperwork real fast once a rep was asking questions.
