My attempt to switch to native plants backfired in a weird way

I replaced a 200 square foot patch of lawn with native wildflowers from a local nursery in Portland last spring. Turns out the soil there was totally wrong for them, too much clay and not enough drainage. They all drowned after three heavy rains in May before they could even get established. Has anyone else run into soil chemistry issues trying to shift away from grass?
