My buddy Rick told me to skip map scripting in my Doom WAD and just use vanilla linedefs, he was dead wrong
I spent 3 weeks building a 9 level WAD for Doom II and Rick kept telling me to keep it simple, no scripts, just linedef triggers like the old days. I listened for the first 4 maps and they played flat, no ambushes, no moving floors, nothing memorable. So I ripped it out and rewrote the whole thing in ACS, and the last 5 maps got way better feedback on the Doomworld forums. Anyone else get talked out of a technique by a purist friend and regret it?
Hold on, three weeks and Rick just casually told you to scrap the ACS stuff like it was no big deal? Nine levels is a ton of work, and you had to go back and redo five of them because he wanted to play purist. The part that gets me is you actually had to build the first four maps twice, that is brutal. Linedef triggers are fine for doors and lifts but you cannot fake a good ambush or a floor that drops out from under you with just vanilla tricks. The Doomworld feedback proves it, players notice when a map has real movement and surprises. Next time Rick gives advice, maybe let him test the WAD before he tells you how to build it.
