Tried a mandoline without the guard for speed and paid the price

Was slicing 30 pounds of potatoes for a catering gig and figured I could go faster without that safety guard, lost a chunk of my left thumb tip in under 2 seconds. Anyone else learned that lesson the hard way or am I the only idiot?

lost a chunk of my left thumb tip in under 2 seconds" is the part that gets me... because it's almost like the mandoline is faster than your brain can even process the danger. People always talk about the pain after but nobody mentions how you literally don't feel it at first, just see the damage and your brain takes a second to catch up.

47 stitches and a thumbnail that grows in looking like a broken fingernail for the rest of my life. The worst part is my brain still thinks the chunk is there so I keep trying to grab things with a phantom thumb tip. At least now I can freak out guests by showing them the scar and telling them I lost it to a potato.
