Had a guy at the dump tell me to use rice instead of thermal paste

I was at the electronics recycling center over near Springfield about 8 months ago, tossing an old motherboard when this older guy stopped me. He said he'd been fixing computers for 20 years and swore by using dry white rice as a thermal compound substitute. Told me his Pentium 4 ran 15 degrees cooler with rice than with the cheap paste from the dollar store. I mean, part of me thinks that's crazy and would screw up your heatsink contact, but another part wonders if desperate times call for desperate measures. Has anyone else run into someone pushing a weird household item as a computer fix?

Reminds me of people swearing by duct tape for everything, just different flavors of the same nonsense.

Damn, did he also offer to season your CPU with some salt and pepper? Did he actually show you any proof or was it just "trust me bro" with a straight face?
