A homeowner in Phoenix pointed out my seam lines and I had to admit they were right
I was finishing up a big living room job, feeling pretty good about the tight stretch. The client, an older guy who used to work in upholstery, walked over and said, 'Your seams are telegraphing because you're not staggering the backing cuts enough.' He showed me how he'd cut the backing a full inch back on each piece before joining. I went home, tried it on my next job, and the difference was night and day. Anyone have a better method for preventing seam show-through on plush carpets?

Staggering the backing helps, but you also need to check your seam roller pressure. If you're pressing too hard with a roller, you're just mashing the pile down along the seam line and making it more visible. Use a lighter touch and finish by brushing the pile back up across the seam with your fingers.

So that's why my seams look like a dirt road, @ivan_perez.
