That oak splinter was my best teacher

I was sanding some oak without checking the grain and got a huge splinter. Now I always look at the wood's direction first, and it's made my work way better.

My walnut splinter taught me to always sand with the grain, not against it.

oh man, telling me. I got a nasty one from some purpleheart a while back, and that stuff is no joke. It hurt for days and really drove the point home. Now I run my hand over the board first every single time, no matter what. That one bad splinter honestly changed my whole approach and my projects come out way smoother now.

Ugh, purpleheart like @amyc22 said is the worst for that. I always do a quick fingernail test along the grain now, catches any telltale snag before the sandpaper does.
