Realized I'd been putting on thermal paste wrong for 7 years

Honestly, last month I was building a new PC for a friend in Austin and my GPU temps were hitting 90°C under load. I figured it was just the summer heat, but then I saw a video where a tech just dabbed a pea-sized dot in the center. I'd been spreading it like butter on toast with a credit card the whole time. Dropped 15°C after I tried it the right way. Has anyone else had a basic computer skill they messed up for years?

It's wild how many of us do stuff like that for years without ever questioning it. I think it's part of a bigger pattern where people just stick with what they learned once, even if it's wrong, because they don't run into a big enough problem to make them change. Like, I used to peel bananas from the stem end for like 20 years until a friend showed me they open from the bottom way easier. Thermal paste is the same deal, you just assume the way you're doing it is fine until your computer starts screaming at you.

Oh, dude, the banana thing hits hard, I had the same exact moment with applesauce pouches. It's like we just commit to a method once and never question it until something breaks. That thermal paste thing really shows how we all follow "the way it's always been done" without checking if it's even right. I do the same with cable management, just zip tie everything to one spot and call it done, even if it crushes the wires.
