Old timer at a campsite in Montana gave me bad advice about tent staking
I was setting up in some rocky ground near Glacier last fall and a guy in the next spot told me to just use big rocks on the stakes instead of finding a better spot. He said it's fine, it'll hold... well a wind came through around 2am and my tent collapsed on me. Woke up with a pole snapped and my face in the dirt. Had to pack up and drive two hours to a motel. Anyone else run into advice from strangers that made your trip worse?

That rock trick is the worst advice I ever got too, except my tent slid right off a boulder and I spent the night curled up in my truck like a loser.

Oh man, that's rough. I think the trick only works if you find a flatter spot and really anchor the tent right with some heavy rocks on the inside too. Most people forget that part and end up exactly like you did.
