Just realized most people are setting up their tent's rainfly wrong after a soggy weekend in the Smokies

I saw so many folks with the fly touching the inner tent wall, which totally kills the waterproofing by letting condensation soak through, so now I always leave a full inch of air gap.

My last trip looked like a bathtub.

Oh man, that's the worst feeling. Nothing kills a trip faster than waking up soaked. Been there way too many times myself. A good pitch and checking those lines before bed is everything. That cold, damp misery just sticks with you.

Ugh, "looked like a bathtub" is the perfect way to describe it, that's exactly what happened to me in the Adirondacks last fall. I woke up with a literal puddle in the foot of my sleeping bag because my fly was sagging right onto the tent. I was so mad, it completely ruined a good sleeping bag. Now I'm super paranoid about checking that gap, I even use little pieces of cord to tie it out further if I have to. It makes such a huge difference for staying dry.
