Fell for a $150 lightweight tent that ripped on the second setup near Moab
Thought I was being smart saving weight but the floor material shredded on a smooth patch of gravel, so has anyone else had better luck with the heavier budget brand tents or do all cheap ultralights do this?

Idk, maybe it's just me but I think the heavy budget ones can be hit or miss too. I've seen a few "budget" tents that are actually heavier but still use the same thin floor material that shreds on gravel. The weight savings often come from using less durable fabrics, so it's not really about the brand or price point. A lot of the cheap ultralight tents cut corners on the floor denier to keep the weight down, so you end up with a tent that's basically a fancy rainfly with a trash bag floor. Maybe look for something with a higher denier floor, even if it adds a few ounces.

Did your buddy end up patching that floor with tenacious tape or just buy a new tent?
