Got schooled by an old timer on a job in Boise last Tuesday

Honestly, I was trying to fish a line through a tight wall cavity and getting nowhere for like 20 minutes. This retired installer who lived there saw me struggling and just said, 'Kid, try a coat hanger with a tennis ball on the end.' Ngl, it worked perfectly on the first try. What's the weirdest tool trick you've ever picked up on a job?

That coat hanger trick is a classic! @hunt.rowan makes a good point about stuff getting stuck though. My weirdest trick was using a bag of rice to dry out a soaked phone that fell behind some cabinets. Left it in there overnight and it actually worked! What about tools that aren't tools at all? Like using a credit card to scrape off old caulk or a butter knife to jimmy a latch.

That coat hanger trick is clever for sure. But sometimes those old-school fixes can cause more trouble later. A tennis ball could snag and get stuck, then you're fishing for your fishing tool. I've had better luck with a proper fiberglass rod. It bends but won't leave junk in the wall.

Sounds like you've turned fishing for keys into a whole new sport.
