PSA: We chose a fixer-upper over a move-in ready house...
It was a 1960s ranch in need of a new roof and kitchen versus a smaller, updated condo. We went with the ranch for the space, but after six months, the costs are way higher than we planned. Anyone else take on a big project and have it go over budget?

Yeah, the "way higher than we planned" part is the universal truth of renovations. We found asbestos tape on our ductwork, which added a whole extra zero to the HVAC quote we weren't ready for. It's never just the roof, it's the rotten decking underneath it too.

Oh man, that's the rule. You open one wall and find a hundred year old bird's nest and knob and tube wiring. You think you're just fixing a leaky faucet and suddenly you're replacing all the pipes in the house because they're original and made of lead. It's like a terrible treasure hunt where every prize costs five grand.
