My DIY floating shelf project ended with the fire department showing up

I thought anchoring into a stud was safe, but I hit a water pipe and flooded the kitchen during the final walkthrough.

My contractor friend showed me a real simple trick with a pipe detector before drilling. It saved me from the same mess, you should get one of those.

So you just went straight for the stud finder and hoped for the best? I've heard those things can miss pipes if they're not the right type. What kind of detector was your friend using, the magnetic kind or one with a live wire setting?
