Pro tip: cut our shop's upload time in half with one weird router setting
We run a small wood shop up in Tacoma and our 40 Mbps upload was choking whenever we pushed design files to clients, so I turned off a default QoS setting on the router that was throttling uploads to save bandwidth for downloads. Speeds jumped to 75 Mbps overnight and nobody touched a wire. Is it smarter to just pay for a bigger pipe, or mess with router settings like this?
That QoS setting you turned off was probably set to prioritize download traffic at like 80/20, which makes sense if you're mostly pulling files but kills you when you're the one uploading. Tacoma has some decent business fiber options now but the install fees and contracts can lock you in for 3 years, plus the wiring to your shop space might not even support a bigger pipe without a buildout. Before you pay more, log into the router and check if you can just set a custom upload floor or split the QoS percentages yourself. You might get most of that bigger-pipe speed for free.
Last time I messed with QoS I broke my whole network for 2 hours and had to factory reset the router while my wife yelled at me from the other room. She was right though, I had zero clue what those sliders actually did and just dragged them around like a DJ. So yeah, check the custom upload floor first, way cheaper than me paying a tech 150 bucks to tell me I'm an idiot.
