Tried the cash envelope thing for 3 months in Phoenix and actually spent $40 more per month
I switched to cash envelopes for groceries and fun money back in March, but I kept running back to the ATM and paying $3 fees because I never pulled enough on Sundays. Half of me says the system works and I just did it wrong, the other half thinks cards with a written limit are simpler. Which side are you on, did envelopes actually cut your spending or just make it more annoying?
The ATM fees thing is real, I hit that same wall where the $3 fee eats whatever you "saved" by being strict. What finally worked for me was pulling cash once a month instead of every Sunday, so the envelope amount covers four weeks and I'm not making extra trips. It's less about the envelope and more about not touching the ATM more than once.
