You know what took me a while to figure out? "Pay yourself first" doesn't mean just throwing money into a savings account and forgetting about it. For me it meant actually paying a bill to myself. Like a real bill with a set amount and a due date. I set up an automatic transfer for $50 every payday into a separate checking account. After 3 months I realized that account was just sitting there doing nothing. So I started moving that money into a high yield savings account instead. Now that same $50 actually grows a little bit instead of just collecting dust.
