my coworker's 3 ring binder changed how I meal plan

Saw my coworker Dana at the break room flipping through this beat up binder with plastic sleeves full of weekly meal charts. She budgets $250 a month for groceries but was feeding a family of 4 in Austin with it. Turns out she just repeats the same 5 dinners on a 2 week cycle and only shops for those exact items. I tried her method for 3 weeks now and my grocery bill dropped from $480 to $310. How do you guys handle meal variety without blowing up the budget?

The whole "repeat the same 5 dinners" thing works until you hit week 3 and your kids start giving you the side eye at the table. My wife and I tried that exact setup last fall and we made it exactly 11 days before she rebelled and made a giant pot of chili just to break the cycle. What helped us was keeping a list of like 12 cheap staples, rice, beans, eggs, frozen veggies, and just swapping which ones got paired with whatever meat was on sale that week. We still budget the same amount but it feels less like a prison sentence, you know? That binder method is solid for the math part, I just couldn't handle the same plate every Tuesday.
