Appreciation post: My grocery budget plan fell apart in the checkout line

I was at the Kroger on Maple Street last Tuesday, and my cart total came to $127, which was way over my $80 weekly goal. I had a bunch of impulse snacks and a big roast I didn't need. Right there, I put back the roast and three bags of chips, and my total dropped to $78.50. Has anyone else had to make a quick save like that at the register?

Oh, that takes me back. I once had to put back a fancy cheese and a magazine while the person behind me sighed loudly. The cashier was a saint about it, just kept scanning the other items.

Wait, did you have to put them back because you were short on cash? I always feel like the sighing person is mad at the wrong thing, like the store sets the prices not me. That cashier sounds amazing though, some of them get so stressed when the line backs up. It's a small moment of kindness that really sticks with you.
