That hostel booking trick my buddy swore by got me robbed in Prague

My friend Dave kept saying to book private rooms through hostel sites to save cash, claiming they never check who actually stays. Booked one for three nights at Hostel Mango in Prague for $45 a night, way cheaper than a hotel. Third morning I woke up and my phone and wallet were gone from the nightstand. Front desk said I should have used their locker, but the door lock had no deadbolt and the staff keys fit every room. Anyone else had a hostel claim they're safe and then get burned?

Kinda weird how the front desk pointed you to the locker after the fact instead of warning you at check-in. Makes me wonder if they were trying to cover their own tracks or just pass the blame. Places like that count on tourists being too tired and trusting to actually inspect the room's security.
