Overheard a guy at the gate bragging about his "secret" hostel find in Lisbon

I was waiting for a flight last week and this guy was telling his friend he got a private room in a hostel in Lisbon for 20 euros a night. He said the trick was to book directly on their website instead of through the big booking sites, and to ask for a monthly rate even if you only want a week. He claimed most hostels will give you a discount just for cutting out the middleman. Has anyone else tried this approach or found it more risky with cancellations?

20 euros a night for a private room? That sounds way too good to be true honestly.

Read a blog post from some backpacker last week who said she found one for 18 euros in some random neighborhood a bit outside the center, so it's not impossible but you have to be careful.
