Hitchhiking gets called a top budget hack, but my free ride came with a weird ask.
The guy who picked me up wanted me to help him move a couch at his cousin's place. I bailed at the next stop and spent cash on a bus instead.

Bailing was the right call, those random asks never end well. Set a hard rule to never agree to extra stops or tasks. Your safety and time are worth the bus fare every time.

My friend Jake picked up a guy on a ride share who asked to stop at a corner store for smokes. That turned into waiting while he also got a lottery ticket and a drink, then a request to swing by his cousin's place to drop off a bag. Jake was stuck there for forty minutes total and missed his next scheduled ride. He said never again after that.

Yeah, that's solid advice. Karenw90's story about Jake is a perfect example of why you gotta stick to your own rules.
