Booking 3rd party hotel sites is a scam and I don't get why people fall for it

Paid $80 for a room on Expedia last month in Austin and when I showed up the hotel had no record of my reservation, had to rebook directly for $20 more and spent 2 hours on hold to get a refund.

Ain't that just bad luck though, I've used Expedia a dozen times without a hitch.

You ever have a buddy get burned by one of these sites? My friend booked a hotel through Expedia for a weekend trip to Nashville. Got to the front desk at midnight and they had no record of his reservation. He spent two hours on hold with Expedia while his wife sat in the lobby with their luggage.
