Warning: peel and stick backsplash looked amazing for 3 months, now it's peeling in my Houston kitchen

I figured I'd save a few hundred bucks compared to real tile, so I went with that peel and stick stuff from the big box store. Followed every instruction, cleaned the wall with TSP, let it dry fully, pressed each sheet down with a roller. Looked awesome for about 12 weeks, then the edges near the stove started curling and getting greasy. Peeled right off in one sheet last Tuesday, took some drywall with it. I compared it to a friend's place where she used actual tile but bought from a salvage place, paid about the same per square foot and hers has been solid for over a year. Anyone else have this happen or did I just pick a bad brand? What's the cheapest real tile route that doesn't require a wet saw for a small kitchen?

Tile store remnants are way cheaper and hold up way better.
