That video last week about painting over stained wood got me thinking people are way too scared of leaving the grain visible

I overheard some guy at Home Depot telling his friend you HAVE to strip everything down to bare wood or it looks trashy, but honestly a solid coat of matte paint over old oak trim can look intentional and rustic if you don't glob it on thick, has anyone else just skipped the sanding and gotten compliments anyway?

My neighbor Jenny tried this on her bathroom wainscoting last summer. She just put two thin coats of flat white latex right over the old varnished pine. No sanding, no primer, nothing. Her dad came over and told her it looked like a rental flip job. But honestly it came out looking like a cozy farmhouse sink area. Three different guests at her housewarming asked where she bought the pre-finished beadboard panels.

Proof that half the battle is just picking the right white. Jenny's dad can kick rocks, lol.
