PSA: A fresh coat of clear matte polyurethane transformed my kitchen cabinets for $12
I was dead set on ripping out my old oak cabinets but tried sealing them with a $12 can of clear matte polyurethane from Lowe's instead. The difference was night and day the gloss was gone and the wood looked modern. Has anyone else gotten good results from just sealing instead of painting?

Did the matte polyurethane change the color of the wood much, or did it just take away that orangey gloss from the 90s? I've been thinking about trying this on my own cabinets but I'm worried it'll darken them too much.

Nah I've got to disagree with you there. Clear poly still gave my oak cabinets that amber tone over time, it just took a few months to show up instead of right away.
