My friend told me my peel-and-stick backsplash looked like a rental special

I had this checkerboard vinyl on my kitchen wall for like 3 years thinking it looked fine until my buddy called it out. Swapped it out for some real subway tile from the Habitat ReStore for $40 and suddenly my whole kitchen doesn't scream 'college apartment' anymore. Anyone else get called out for a cheap upgrade that actually wasn't that cheap-looking after all?

Honestly yeah, same thing happened with me and my peel-and-stick floor tiles. My sister straight up said it looked like a dorm room and I was mad but she was right.

Kept my stick on backsplash for almost 2 years before my buddy came over and asked if the landlord picked it out. Felt like such a clown. Finally swapped it for some real herringbone tile from a salvage place and my kitchen actually looks like a human lives here now instead of a broke sophomore. Worst part is I was proud of it at first. Thought I was being smart saving money but really I was just making my apartment look like a prop from a cheap sitcom.
