Showerthought: I saw a chart showing how much cheaper dry beans are than canned
I was looking at some old USDA price data from 2023 and the numbers were wild. A pound of dry pinto beans costs about $1.50 and makes the same amount as 6 or 7 cans. Those cans would run you over $6 easy. I always grabbed the cans for speed, but the math is hard to ignore. It takes some planning to soak them overnight, but the savings are huge. Has anyone else made the switch and found a good way to cook a big batch for the week?

But that quick soak trick still uses way more energy and time than just opening a can.

Wait, didn't some food blog say you can quick-soak beans by boiling them for a few minutes then letting them sit for an hour? I tried it last week and it cut the time way down. Made a giant pot and froze some.
