Pro tip: Stop buying pre-shredded cheese for budget meals

I noticed people throwing shredded cheese into their cart at the store not realizing it costs $2 more per pound than a block and has anti-caking stuff that messes up melting. Have you actually compared the price per ounce on those bags versus a block?

My buddy Mike finally did the math last month after complaining his nachos came out clumpy. He bought a block of cheddar for $3.50 versus the bag for $5.25 and it melted perfectly on his chili dogs. Now he grates it himself and says the extra 30 seconds is worth not eating sawdust.

That anti-caking stuff is the worst. It's basically powdered cellulose and it turns a good cheese sauce into a gritty mess. Your buddy Mike is right about the extra 30 seconds, when you factor in the cost difference you're literally paying money for the privilege of worse texture. Pre-shredded is just a trap for people who don't have time to read labels.
