Overheard someone say rice is a waste of money, then I did the math

At the checkout line, this guy told his friend that a $5 bag of rice was pointless because pasta is cheaper. I mean, I calculated it and a 2lb bag makes about 12 servings for me, so that's like 40 cents a meal. Anyone else got a cheap staple that people just overlook?
