Realized I was killing my ferns with kindness for years
I kept my Boston ferns in the bathroom for humidity, but they always looked sad. A clerk at the plant nursery in Asheville finally asked if my bathroom had a window, and mine didn't. Who knew they still needed real light? Anyone else mess up a basic plant need for way too long?

Is it really that basic though? My grandma kept a fern in her dim hallway for twenty years and it was fine. Some plants just don't follow the rules. I've seen them thrive in weird spots, like a north facing basement window, while a perfect sunny bathroom kills them. It feels like luck half the time.

Grandma plants are a whole different breed, they just have that magic touch. My own track record is pretty bad, honestly (I've killed a cactus, which feels like a special kind of failure). Sometimes a plant just decides it likes a weird spot, and we're all just guessing. It definitely makes me wonder how much is science and how much is just random chance.
