Rant: That old expansion tank on the Westgate job was way heavier than it looked.
We tried to muscle it off the bracket with a standard pry bar and the whole mount sheared. Anyone have a go-to method for stubborn, heavy tanks that won't risk the fittings?

Oh man, "the whole mount sheared" is a sound I can HEAR in my head. My go-to move is a ratchet strap from a solid point above, just to take the weight. Then you can usually wiggle it free without putting all that stress on the bracket. I learned this after I tried the pry bar method and basically did a full backflip when it let go. Not my proudest moment, but the drywall behind the tank has a cool new dent shape.

Wait, you actually did a backflip when it let go?

Ratchet straps are a solid plan. I had a mount snap on me last year and ended up using a floor jack with a block of wood under the tank. Lifted it just enough to take pressure off the bolts so they'd turn. Way safer than fighting it with your whole body weight. That pry bar method sounds like a quick way to meet your drywall up close.
