I mocked the fiberglass blanket for 8 months, now I won't weld without it
Started at the BP refinery in Whiting back in March and thought the fire blanket was just extra weight in the truck. After getting cooked on a 6-inch schedule 80 line near the coke drums, I finally wrapped it around the preheat zone. Cut my cool-down wait by almost 20 minutes per pass and the weld inspector at the 4 PM check said my HAZ looked cleaner than the last crew's work. Has anyone else found their crew skips the blanket unless the QC guy is standing there?
