A journeyman in Toledo told me my 6010 root pass looked like a stack of dimes, but it was actually too cold and lacked penetration, so I cranked the heat up 10 amps and focused on a tighter arc length.
Anyone else get a piece of advice that went against what you thought was a perfect weld?

Oh man, that hits close to home. My first "pretty" vertical up fillet was a total fraud. I was so proud of the smooth, shiny look until the foreman broke it with a hammer. It just peeled right off, all that beauty sitting on top with zero fusion. Felt like a real artist, but my art was just a fancy sticker.

Ugh, heard a guy call that "cosmetic welding" once. All show, no go. Looks perfect until you actually test it.
