Had to pick a game for a group of new players last weekend

It was between a heavy Euro like Agricola or a simple party game like Codenames. I went with Agricola because I thought they could handle it. Big mistake, the teach took 45 minutes and two people zoned out. Should have just stuck with the easy option. What's your go-to game for a mixed skill group?

You learned the hard way with Agricola. My go-to is always Ticket to Ride for a mixed group. It's simple to learn but has enough game for everyone.

Yeah, Ticket to Ride is a perfect choice for that (I've made the Agricola mistake too).

Totally agree about picking the right game for the crowd. Read a blog post once that called games like Ticket to Ride "gateway games" for a reason. They get people playing without a huge rule book fight first. That Agricola mistake is so real... it looks fun but just stresses new people out. The goal is to have everyone want to play again, not feel like they failed a test. Sticking with simple rules and clear turns just works better for mixed groups.
