Game night with my group turned into a 4 hour rules argument
Last Saturday we played a heavy worker placement game and one guy kept quoting the rulebook wrong, so we voted to house-rule it against the FAQ... then the whole session fell apart. Has anyone else had a group where the 'expert' was the biggest problem, even when everyone else double-checked the manual?

Man, I felt this one in my soul. I heard on a podcast once that the "rules lawyer" type is like the number one killer of game nights, and honestly that tracks with what I have seen. The tricky part is that the person usually knows the rules well enough to sound right, so everyone just goes along with it until it is too late. From what I have read, the fix is to decide before you start that the rulebook is the final word and nobody gets to argue with it mid game, even if they swear they read a FAQ somewhere. Your mileage may vary but that small ground rule has saved a few of my sessions.
