TIL that using a piece of angle iron as a makeshift anvil actually works

I always thought you needed a proper anvil to do any real work, but I was stuck and tried a scrap piece of 3/4 inch angle iron clamped to my stump. It held up for a whole afternoon of making small hooks. What's something you thought was a bad idea that turned out okay?

My grandpa's old vise actually works better for some jobs than my new one.
