I finally gave up on my old coal forge setup after a near-miss in the shop
Was working on a big scroll in my garage last month when a clinker clogged the tuyere and sent a jet of hot gas and sparks right at my leg. I switched to a propane rig the next day, but is there a good way to prevent that with coal?

Sent a jet of hot gas and sparks right at my leg" is terrifying. That's a hard lesson to learn the scary way. Good call switching to propane for safety.

Actually, propane has its own serious risks that people ignore. That high pressure can lead to bigger, faster leaks if a hose fails. Propane is heavier than air and pools in low spots, creating a huge explosion hazard indoors. Sometimes the older, simpler gear is safer if you know exactly how it works and respect it. Switching fuels doesn't automatically make you safe, it just trades one set of dangers for another.
