Can we talk about online steel orders coming with cracks?

I ordered mild steel from a big online site. When I forged it, the bars cracked and had uneven carbon with slag bits. Other smiths nearby have seen the same thing this month. Be careful with where you buy your steel now.

My last order from Metals Depot was completely fine, no cracks or slag that I could find. It might just be a bad batch from that one site rather than all online steel. I would not write off every supplier based on one problem.

Yeah, @riverp37, folks often judge all places by one bad order, same as with food spots or apps. It's a quick blame game.

Totally agree with what mason283 said about the blame game. Saw a forum thread where someone had a bad weld from some cheap steel and swore off buying metal online forever, which seems a bit extreme. riverp37 has a point about bad batches too, that stuff happens even with the big local suppliers sometimes. You just gotta check reviews and maybe not put all your trust in one order from a new place.
