Update: Bought a $60 bearing press for my home shop and it's been worth every penny

I was trying to install a new headset on a customer's gravel bike last month and was still using the old threaded rod and washers method. It was always a bit fiddly and I never felt like I got perfect alignment. I finally bit the bullet and got the proper press. The first time I used it, the cups went in straight and smooth in about 30 seconds with zero stress. It's one of those tools you don't think you need until you have it. What other 'single use' tools have you guys found actually pay for themselves?

That "zero stress" part is so real. What was the worst job you did with the old method before you got the press?

And that's exactly why I think @jamesmason is missing the point with his comment. It's like the difference between using a hand saw for every cut versus finally getting a table saw, once you know that feeling of not breaking a sweat you start noticing how much easier other stuff could be too. The bigger pattern I see is how we get so used to hard ways of doing things that we forget to look for the easier path, it's like that in every part of life not just the garage.

Sounds like a lot of fuss over some washers and a rod.
