That Tuesday when I rebuilt 3 rear hubs in a row and got it right every time
Last month I had a weirdly good day at the shop where every hub overhaul just clicked. I had 3 customers bring in old Shimano 105 hubs from the late 90s, all with gritty bearings and loose cones. Normally I hate doing hubs because the ball bearings always go flying or I lose a spacer, but that day I had the patience to clean everything, pack fresh grease, and adjust each one with zero play and smooth rotation. Took me about 45 minutes per hub, which is fast for me. The second one was a little sticky at first but I backed the cone off an 8th of a turn and it was perfect. The third one had a damaged dust cover that I managed to re-seat without cracking it. Has anyone else had one of those days where the bike gods just smile on you and everything goes smooth?
The bike gods thing is a stretch for me because I've had too many of those perfect days turn into a nightmare on the next job. Calling it luck or divine intervention takes away from the fact you probably just had your technique dialed in after years of doing this. Give yourself some credit instead of passing it off to some mystical force that doesn't care about your cone adjustment.
See this same pattern everywhere. People say "traffic was terrible today" instead of admitting they left late again. Blame the universe instead of owning their choices. Same with relationships too. "It just didn't work out" instead of saying they stopped putting in the work.
Kinda takes the power out of your own hands when you call it luck or fate. You're the one who spent years figuring out those cones. That's not random. That's earned.
