Spent 5 hours fighting a 2004 printer driver, the fix was one checkbox
I pulled my old HP LaserJet 1018 out of the basement because my new printer ran out of ink and I refused to pay $60 for a cartridge. Got it hooked up, Windows 11 says it's ready, but every print job just sits in the queue doing nothing. I tried 3 different driver versions, messed with the USB ports, even restarted the print spooler like every forum said. After 5 hours I noticed a tiny checkbox in the advanced settings that said "use legacy print mode" and checked it on a whim. Prints started flying out instantly. My neighbor laughed and told me he had the same issue last year, but nobody talks about it because the printer is older than some college students. Has anyone else wasted a whole evening on a driver setting that was hiding in plain sight?

Used to be the guy who ragged on people for even bothering with old hardware, figured just buy the new stuff and move on. But honestly, that legacy print mode checkbox is the kind of thing that makes you feel like you're losing your mind, because you've done everything "right" and it still fails. Now I get why people hoard those old drivers and keep the install discs, it's not about being cheap, it's about the machine just working. My dad's got a 2006 printer that refuses to die and honestly I'm starting to see his point about keeping this stuff around. Feels like a rite of passage now, so good on you for sticking it out and finding that hidden gem.
