My old boss in Cleveland told me to never use a straight razor on a first time client. He was right.

That "first time client" rule is so true. A straight razor needs a certain kind of skin and beard that a new customer might not have. You don't know their grain or if they get bad razor bumps. I always start with a safety razor on a new face. It's just less risk. You can move to a straight razor later once you know how their skin reacts.

My buddy learned that lesson the hard way. He gave a straight razor shave to a new guy who ended up with razor bumps so bad it looked like a chemical burn. Totally backs up what @ellis.charles said. The guy's skin just couldn't handle it, and now my friend sticks to safety razors for first timers.
